So many of these stories were over my head, some were quite upsetting and startling, others were the loveliest I have ever read.

great narrations, unique style, each story is a marvelous travel towards the fantasy and folklore of the Caribbean coast.

via NYPL - This book compiles three shorter books of short stories Garcia Marquez published during his life. The first set, I must admit, was a chore to get through - there are some excellent passages, and his ability to capture a mood or moment is impressive. But nothing happens, stories just amble aimlessly and the directionlessness of it all begins to wear on a reader (this one anyway). The second set was much better, with passing nods to "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and more character-driven (but no less mystical or surreal) stories. Not much essential in there and, as with many short stories collections, the results are hit or miss, but the overall standard is at least engaging. The third book - well, I ran out of time and had to return the book to the library.

Way better than his novels. This is why he won the Nobel Prize.

Living here with YoYo and the hispanic language of the television, sometimes plays funny things. I enjoy the Soccer, and managed to catch Rome Vs. Athens yesterday which ended on a 1 point tie. Now sometimes the old sitcoms are funny, even though I can’t understand them it’s not really necessary. YoYo, is wholly blind. He can’t see a thing! I don’t wonder what that would be like, I’d be pretty sad not to see the beautiful world. I’d probably listen to audiobooks and podcasts, radio stations and other educational stuff.

Collected Stories is a touch magical, though I actually really enjoyed listening to Kazuo Ishiguro’s story collection, Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall. I understand a writer better from their short stories than by long form, sometimes reading a full novel gets congested and it’s just nice to have a break, a new angle, some new story to tell that doesn’t rely just on density to be good; a short story can mean much & pack a lot in. When it comes to Márquez, por ejemplo reading ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ is an endeavor of confusion. The meaning gets lost on me, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to glean from it, (I had the same problem with Iris Murdoch’s The Sea, The Sea; I’m not intuitive… I like clear presentation of what I should think about that: in my case, Tell, and if you must Show, attach pictures!) I used to hate books with pictures in them until non-fiction.

So I suppose I like Gabriel Garcia Márquez best for short stories. There are a few authors I feel that way about. Of these stories I liked best: “One Day After Saturday” and “The Sea of Lost Time”, the sea smells of roses, and men with ‘snakes coiled about their necks who were selling the elixir of life.’ Hey, I have a story idea… 😂 if you know anyone whose sick, try exposing them to a snakebite and maybe they’ll live longer. 🤷🏼

I also like the story about the dentist, “One of These Days”, in which Aurelio Escovar grudgingly extracts the mayor’s tooth. I learned that Aries is the sign of solitude. Maybe I’ll get a corsair’s tattoo and complete the pirate look! 🏴‍☠️

“We might have said that we were doing what we’d been doing every day of our lives.”

Beautiful and short stories filled with symbolism and striking feelings. I liked it a lot, but sometimes it was difficult for me to put everything together and figure out what Marquez was trying to say.
