It was slow to start, but once it picked up it was a gripping account of survival during WWII. I love the history of the nest and the story telling of so many different lives in the Netherlands. 4.5/5 rounded up.

The story was exceptional and incredibly inspiring. But it was hard for me to get into it because of the writing. I understand it was translated to English, so that's probably why, but I didn't enjoy reading this very much due to that.

Heel erg goed boek. Vloeiend en fast-paced geschreven, een zeer indrukwekkende geschiedenis en erg aangrijpend. Het tofste vind ik dat dit boek tot stand is gekomen, omdat de schrijfster zelf in 't Hooge Nest is komen te wonen. Bij de renovatie werden de geheime plekken en allerlei vetzetsmateriaal gevonden, waardoor de schrijfster onderzoek ging doen en dit boek heeft geschreven.

Wow. What a book. As with many resistance stories, especially those of women, I hadn't heard of these women before. What an amazing story. This book is well written and flows really well, which for a non-fiction book, is not easy to do! I do have two complaints. First, this book needs a map or two. I have a faint inkling where Amsterdam is in The Netherlands but other than that I have no idea about the city itself or the geography of the rest is the country, so a map or two is definitely needed. Second, citing sources. This is the main reason this book is not dive stars. It's a non-fiction book! You have to cite your sources and not just a bibliography in the book! It was so incredibly frustrating to see stuff in this book but then I have NO idea where it came from.

Ik vond het echt helemaal niks. Ik heb het ook niet uitgelezen. Het waren allemaal feitjes die werden opgesomd en tijden die door elkaar begonnen te lopen. Ik ben een mega fan van oorlogsboeken en oorlogsverhalen maar vond dit echt niet te lezen. Ik heb het zowel in het Engels als het Nederlands geprobeerd en kwam er niet door heen. Het is waarschijnlijk het verhaal wat bij dit boek sterren heeft verdient, maar de schrijfstijl laat een hoop te wensen over. De schrijfster is vast een hele goede journalist, maar voor mij persoonlijk geen auteur.

Audioboek op 2x snelheid gaat zeer snel maar maakt dit verhaal niet minder boeiend. De verhalen over hoe vaak het verzetswerk bijna misgaat en hoe ze ondanks het huis toch van elk geluid schrikken zijn akelig spannend en het verhaal van de zussen is erg bijzonder.

Dit boek stond bij mijn ouders in de kast. Ik ben zelf opgegroeid in de buurt van ‘t Hooge Nest en als kind vond ik dat altijd maar een eng huis, daar in het bos. Niet wetende wat zich daar heeft afgespeeld. Dit boek is een absolute must-read en vertelt het verhaal van de Joodse familie Brillenslijper. Vaak ik heb ik mezelf moeten verplichten om door te lezen; door alle gruwel, pijn, emoties en verschrikkelijkheden die er allemaal hebben plaatsgevonden. Maar het vertelt ook een verhaal van hoop, veerkracht en saamhorigheid. Dat we dit nooit mogen vergeten.
