I hesitated between 3 and 4 stars for this one but decided it was worth rounding up. At times poetically absurd, at others weirdly genius, Space Opera sucked me in just when I expected it not to. In general I have mixed feelings about comedic sci-fi because so much falls short of greats like Pratchett and Adams. Space Opera is worthy of a place on the shelf with them and I look forward to seeing more from her. This is a super weird and wonderful universe she's created and I'm curious what other stories can be told here.

Love the story, but not the writing style. Lots of really fun aliens!

Fun and addictive writing! But it basically lacked a plot - I felt like it was all build up!

I really wanted to enjoy this book. I love the sound of the story idea. But...I had to DNF it.
There are very wordy descriptions. Very unique descriptions, but I got lost in what we were talking about. The story felt jumpy in time and characters for me. A very round about way to get to the point. So much "history" to tell current events. I struggled with audio in this sense. I'm thinking reading the book would have done me better, so I could keep up with who we are talking about and when.
I did enjoy listening to Heath's voice as he narrated though.

This is going to be the kind of book you're either going to enjoy or hate immensely. Valente gets to be immensely creative in this book. Her descriptions are trippy and multidisciplinary, and she uses words from marine science like a champ. The story feels a bit like nonsense, and in some ways it is, but I was surprisingly moved by the ending, and if you are into a psychedelic space trip for your mind with the weirdest images you could ever imagine combining, this will not disappoint.
