I thought there were too many storylines and it was disappointing they didn’t come together in a 900-page book. The stories were interesting, but by switching from storyline so often it made it hard for me to get really involved. BUT I love the world of Esta and Harte and I love Viola so I probably will be reading the last book to see how it ends

First book in the series where the characters begun to annoy me. Feels way too long, despite the constant action, because nothing gets accomplished.

I have absolutely adored the progression of this series up until this book. The characters are diverse and interesting, with compelling motives and backgrounds. It also feels as if there’s a character for every reader to relate to, and it’s refreshing to have a vast array of perspectives that help to break up the length of this book. However, I do feel as though the plot in this book was too similar to the previous book in the series for my liking. The circumstances and locations are different, but it follows the ‘find where object is - retrieve object - lose object’ cycle in redundant circles to the point where I spent the last 200 pages of this book waiting for it to get somewhere new. The detailed writing, magic, suspense, and character growth were a saving grace for the shortcoming of a repeated plot. I also appreciate how Maxwell incorporates real historical events and respectfully highlights social injustices and oppression that minorities during the early 1900’s faced. It makes for an interesting read that also helps the reader to reflect on the social issues that were faced by many people during this time period. I am hopeful that the conclusion of the series will provide more progress within the plot and wrap up the series in a satisfying manner!

I liked it, but so slow, I don’t think it furthered the plot hugely.
