3.0

A high 3. It obviously is of most interest to people in Des Moines, as it's about the religious diversity of our city, but I think it could have a broader appeal for people who want to see just how many different kinds of backgrounds make up a modern American urban area.

The visuals are probably the biggest selling point, as they give a clear depiction of the unique architecture and people that define each community. Additionally, it can be read quickly and doesn't bog down.

The downsides are just that each chapter is a bit formulaic and much of it feels like it's written to check boxes for giving a holistic picture than really writing about distinction. Some of these very different communities can blend together a bit as a result. This definitely resulted in some skimming on my part.

But for someone, especially someone in Des Moines, who wants to know more about the many communities that make this city what it is, this is an important book. I'm glad to have read it, and would recommend it to any other central Iowans who can't help but think this place is boring. Maybe this will shake your notions up a tad.
