Jesus christ. What a knockout novel about Trans history that isn’t afraid to wade into the muddy, messy details while also being deeply compassionate.

well done but felt a little introductory and like it was written with a cis audience in mind. appreciated the characterization of trans history as more of a history of people playing around with gender rather than a strict history of trans-identified people and thought that the author walked the line between "the language of transness/queerness is relatively new" and "gender noncomformity has always existed" well while respecting the experiences and identities of figures they placed within trans history. i actually liked how they jumped around in different periods of history and thought that it tied the book together.
