A satirical attack on the intellectuals, writers, poets, and thinkers who are so educated and consider themselves at the forefront of culture, yet are completely mute when it comes to actually doing anything helpful for society with their knowledge, and are silent in the face of, or even cowardly capitulating to, authoritarianism against the country they claim to love.

As always, I am swept up and taken to a new world with Bolaño's writing. This is yet another example of the incredible webs he weaves with fiction. A short whirl-wind read.

Interesting book, but not quite as good as Distant Star. Chronicles the life of a priest who is trying to come to terms with his life before his death. He reflects on the chapters of his life that were morally questionable and how it changed him as a person. Overall, a good read. There is a sections about a priest who uses falcons to kill pigeons that is especially well written.
