Seems to me to be a good introduction to Lovecraft's work. The title story and The Dreams in the Witch-House in particular appealed to me, not as horror but as interesting science fiction type tales tinged with elements of the unnerving. Looking forward to reading more of his works now!

My first introduction to the Lovecraftian type horror was in Bloodborne by From-software, an amazing, almost perfect game. And after being absorbed and obsessed with the game's lore I realized there's a lot more of this type of horror in books, so I decided to start here.
This book is very atmospheric rich, the author manages to create a horrific and cold world for us to visit. It starts slow and steady and you do feel a sense of dread and unnerving because you can't truly grasp what was and is happening. There seems to be a deep lore (that will probably be explored more in other books, i guess) and H.P managed to create a world that seems real.
The main characters are likeable, although you only read the thoughts and emotion of one, and do get somewhat developed in the latter part of the book.
My main, and perhaps only, criticism is that H.P repeats a lot of the descriptions of the surrounding, and by the end where you want to read more about the creatures or the past horrors some others characters went through, there's more and more descriptions of the mountains and building, and it gets somewhat boring.
In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm going to explore the rest of his books and world. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting some horror in their lives!
