This book was a tough ride.

The writing style was really painful for me (because it was so slow and the letters didn’t really help me feel immersed) but at the same time Laurel‘s story was quite beautiful.

If it weren’t for the slowness of the book and how I really didn’t get to connect with anyone in this book, I may have given it more stars, but 2 feel right to me right now.

This book felt quite therapeutic though, even if it’s just in the knowledge of that I‘m happy I‘m not as depressed and traumatized as Laurel.

Hola!

This book had an interesting premise with writing letters to popular actors/musicians that have died. I was thinking while reading it that some kids might not know who some of the people were but the author gave background information for each of them that went along with Laurel's story which I thought was clever.

I wasn't a big fan of Laurel. I know she went through a lot especially
Spoilerwith witnessing her sister commit suicide which shocked me. Her sister didn't show that she was depressed and I was surprised when she jumped. There must have been something going on with the last guy she dated because the last time she saw him, she was crying and upset.
Also, I was pissed at her when she was allowing that friend of her sister's boyfriend to take advantage of her. While I was reading it, I wanted to yell at her to tell her that she was smarter than that to let him do that!!!

One thing that "urks" me with YA literature is when the parents are sucky parents. I know it must be super hard to loose a love one especially a son or daughter but for Laurel's mom to just leave her and her dad and move out to California was selfish in my opinion. I'm glad at the end her parents' behavior seem to change for the better.

This book will be for fans of Perks of Being a Wallflower although I have to admit I liked that much more than this.
