Overall: What a treat! The conflicts are budding to the surface and the added suspense of moving up the execution makes the drama and action feel even more dire. Kubo does a really good job dangling carrots of information while weaving an engaging story! I loved this volume!
Notes:
- I held in my breath when Hitsugaya had to knock Momo out and when fighting Gin she almost died from Toshiro dodging his blade. Matsumoto's presence and then the immediate withdrawal of Gin adds so many layers to his character. Their bond is more than classmates as Toshiro suggested and the depth that she has is somewhat showcased.
- Aizen's letter is mind-boggling!
- The execution update hit so hard! Seeing the internal strife before any resolution between the captains and lieutenants held readers in suspense. I was heartbroken when Jushiro, Rukia's captain, fought harder with Byakuya for her life than he did. Byakuya's callous comments on Kaien's death and dead subordinates not mattering was heart-breaking and shows two different leaderships - two different soul societies within the whole.
- Kenpachi and Squad 11's team-up with Orihime to find Ichigo and help the others was so satisfying! Orihime is much cleverer than she's given credit for, as Uryu mentioned in a previous volume during this arc, she has a gift of feeling Ichigo's spiritual pressure but she wisely doesn't comment to Ikkaku or Yumichika. While it doesn't deter Kenpachi, I credit her brains in an attempt to keep Ichigo safe.
- I can't believe two captains versus one is highlighting the cracks in the soul society and I can't wait to learn more about Sajin and Tosen. Kenpachi is a legend!

I loved seeing the full backstory explaining Kaien and Rukia’s tragic history. I love how Kaien and Ichigo parallel each other and how Rukia sees a lot of Kaien in Ichigo. I loved seeing Toshiro determined to stop the execution, and I like how all the characters are beginning to converge onto one place for Rukia’s execution. I must say that compared to the anime adaptation, I’m enjoying the pacing a lot better in the manga. There were some interesting introductions in this volume as well, and I like how we’re already seeing how different all the Captains are and how they all have differing ideals and opinions.
