You have to hand it to Luffy. He has a truly remarkable talent for turning utter chaos into accidental success. This volume is living proof of that. What should be a desperate, high-stakes prison break turns into something closer to a rowdy family reunion, except the "family" in question consists of criminals and absolute lunatics, all of whom seem to be helping him despite themselves.

It’s an accidental alliance of villains, rogues, and the deeply questionable, and somehow, it works. All of them chaotically aligned in a way that only Luffy could possibly pull off. If anything, it’s a testament to his sheer gravitational force of personality. People don’t follow him because it’s wise, they just follow him because somehow, despite every single rational instinct screaming at them to run the other way, it just feels like the ‘right’ thing to do.

Of course, Hancock’s ability to charm all the prisoners is technically an explanation for why things go as they do but that doesn’t make her horde of lovestruck idiots any less insufferable. I appreciate the plot function of it all, but honestly, it makes me uncomfortable.

Grandfather of the Year, Garp, standing there watching his grandson dismantle a maximum-security prison with sheer force of will, fists, and blind luck, and he is just so damn proud. Which is hilarious. Because on one hand, Garp is a Marine Vice Admiral. On the other hand, he’s still a grandpa, and grandpas love nothing more than seeing their grandkids thrive, even if "thriving" involves an international jailbreak and complete disregard for the law.

This was a riotous volume. And with Luffy and his villains-turned-new-gang hurtling ever closer to Ace’s execution, I feel like things are only going to get more absurd and more dangerous.

This volume is actually a lot darker than I was expecting. Even tho this is a reread for me I have no recollection of this arc except the characters, so it feels like reading it for the first time but I'm more invested in the characters.

Loved seeing old characters return in the volume, as well as some info on the where the other straw hats ended up.

**Reread in 2024- I really enjoy Luffy's time in Impel Down, its exciting, pulls in past villains, and sheds some more light on how terrible the world government is**

Woah, Impel Down seems like the WORST place, more I learn about the world government more I dislike them.
