No, no, this formula you’d have me follow,
However fashionable, is false and hollow,
And I despise the frenzied operations
Of all these barterers of protestations,
These lavishers of meaningless embraces,
These utterers of obliging commonplaces,
Who court and flatter everyone on earth
And praise the fool no less than the man of worth.

i suppose i'm just obsessed with comedies of manners! this was fun and pointed and timeless, it will always amaze me how a 350+ year old play can still apply to modern society in certain ways. some of the rhymes are definitely a stretch and extremely corny but i love how everyone got solidly roasted

He gives a splendid dinner, you must admit.
But must he serve himself along with it?

I, like so many others in this review section, have only read this play in English and so I am afraid that therefore I have missed out on some of the wit that Moliere intended to communicate to his audience. That being said, it was still a hilarious comedy with plenty of humor and cleverness. But then you take into account the setting this play was written in it becomes not simply entertaining, but fascinating. Moliere was highly criticized by the Church for his comedies that were often times satires which poked fun at different elements of society, including the Church in his famous “Tartuffe.” However, Moliere was favored by the king and his theater troupe was even known as “The King’s Troupe.” In this play he pokes fun at the “nouveau riche” (newly rich) or social climbers. The title is an oxymoron because one could not be a bourgeois (middle class) person and also a gentilhomme (gentleman, or nobleman). It is a fun read featuring a ridiculous “lord” and the antics those around him use to trick him and take advantage of his foolishness!
