I love how Tursten always gives you a seemingly good character and then it turns out that they are quite Machiavellian. It's my new favourite thing.

The story in itself isn't exciting, but it's readable. The last few chapters are amazing, though.

This book is a mystery that takes place in Norway/Sweden and follows a woman named Embla, who is a detective inspector and also a welterweight, which I learned is basically boxing. Every year she goes to visit her uncle to participate in an annual moose hunt with family and friends, but this year there’s a thirteenth person at the hunt, which apparently is bad luck. His name is Peter, and he gained control of an estate after a relative died. He immediately seemed really suspicious - when he was having his home remodeled there were people who were not allowed in certain rooms. Embla thinks he’s hiding something, but as she spends more time with him they get closer together. For me it seemed too obvious at first that he was a killer, but in an interesting twist, he is. At one point when Embla is over at his house, and sleeps with him, she finds a hidden room with snakes and then she wakes, having been hit in the head and then chained up. We learned that Peter was hiding all this equipment and technology that let him spy on other members of the hunting party and control had hacked into their phones (and even in one instance a person’s vehicle to kill them). While the build up to this finale felt sort of slow, I really did enjoy reading Embla fight off the killer and escape. The juxtaposition between the moose hunting tradition being flipped on its head with Embla becoming the target or “prey” was interesting. I just was a bit confused about Peter’s motivations for killing the men. I think he had written the notes (M for Camilla?) to members of the hunting party because he remembered them from him witnessing what happened to his sister at a young age. And he had become haunted by that. And that’s part of the reason why Embla felt a connection with him is because she lost her best friend at a very young age. At the end, it’s clear that almost dying at the hands of Peter has had a harrowing impact on Embla that sounds like it will follow her in the subsequent stories. I think I will read on because I’m really interested in her past and what happened with her friend. I’m eager for more answers!

The sleuth is a little too noir and quirky for me. It was pretty well plotted. None of the other characters were very likable. Inspector Huss series is better. The setting is a 2 week moose hunt in Sweden so the details of that were interesting. Can’t think of anything I’d less rather do though. I wouldn’t have finished it except for the fact that it was a book club book.

Despite my low rating, I didn't hate this book. A lot of it feels like missed potential, but the premise is kind of fun and goofy hence the 2 stars. Also, there's a higher animal body count than human in this novel, so beware.
