Ik kwam er niet echt in. Begonnen in een maand waarin ik eigenlijk te druk was. En vervolgens pas na een lange tussenpauze weer begonnen omdat het boek terug naar de bibliotheek moest. Dat helpt natuurlijk niet. Misschien nog eens een keer herlezen, want erg interessant, maar met te lange tussenpozen raak je de draad kwijt.

I didn't really get into this book. I started in a very busy month with little reading time. And then i had to return it to the library and couldn't start again for a while. With this book the storyline gets blurry when not reading for too long. And it is interesting, very interesting. Maybe i will reread it in a while.

Het is tegelijkertijd een reisverslag, een biografie van John Steinbeck en een biografie van Amerika. Heel ambitieus. Soms werkt het, soms iets minder.

Het is nu, vlak na het tijdperk Trump, wel extra fascinerend om deze beschrijving van Amerika te lezen. Ik heb geen idee hoe goed dit klopt, maar je krijgt wel een idee van waarom Trump kon winnen.

Verder een lang boek, prima geschreven, al duurde het even voor ik er in kwam.

Boeiend reisverslag waarin Mak zoals alleen hij het kan de Amerikaanse politiek en geschiedenis beschouwt en dit doorweeft met persoonlijke observaties en rake menselijke verhalen.

A very interesting read. Mak is inspired by [a:John Steinbeck|585|John Steinbeck|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1182118389p2/585.jpg]'s [b:Travels with Charley: In Search of America|5306|Travels with Charley In Search of America|John Steinbeck|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1347394032s/5306.jpg|1024827] and decides to make the same trip 50 years later. He alternates between stories about John and his trip, his own experiences on the road and historical facts about America. It paints an interesting, if rather bleak picture of the country.

Een blik op het verleden, én op de toekomst van het nu. Op het zelf, op een leven, op een verhaal. En blijven lezen!

Het ideale boek om de geschiedenis en de huidige toestand van Amerika te leren kennen. Vlot en helder geschreven, op geen enkel moment vervelend. Het inspireert bovendien om er een kaart van Amerika bij te nemen, de route te volgen en meer op te zoeken over alle historische feiten die worden aangehaald in het boek. Ik kan critici enkel gelijk geven als ze zeggen: "Geert Mak is de geschiedenisleraar die we allemaal hadden gewild".

Inspired by John Steinbeck, Geert Mak retraces a journey into the heart and soul of America. Mak succeeds in taking the reader by the hand in a process of increased disillusionment with the American project. Well-researched, but at times - such as the pages on current American politics - I found deeply boring. I can't help thinking that even in that sense Mak succeeded in conveying his feelings of despair (although he might loose some readers in the process). Mak clearly describes the tensions between the earlier ideals and current reality. A nation rooted in high Puritan and Enlightment ideals, deeply convinced of their God-given exclusivity, a high-view on their ability to influence the world and with a long-standing foreign policy of maintaining unbalanced power (all those resources for only 6% of world population) and the export the American achievement without trying to grasp what the implications are to others. This nation is now increasingly faced with a loss of economic and political power, an increased loss of equality and human dignity of their own people at home, a breakdown of their cities (Detroit) and infrastructure (California), a loss of certainty in the aftermath of attacks on own soil, the haunting legacy of Vietnam and failed foreign excursions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mak documents the ongoing slide of America, a project Steinbeck also started with 50 years ago. Believing Mak, this time it is no fiction.

Uitgebreid en lekker leesbaar. Door de overvloed aan anekdotes en feiten raakte ik wel geregeld de draad kwijt. Net als de reis van John en Geert, begint het boek vol optimisme, maar gaat het als een pessimistische nachtkaars uit. Ik heb misschien 10% onthouden. Toch 3 sterren, omdat het duidelijk goed onderzocht is en een schat aan informatie geeft.
