The human mind is too complex to understand using only one way of thinking or one kind of technique.

A fascinating book, and very thought provoking about the way mental health is represented and treated, in different settings, whilst also demonstrating how powerful therapy can be and benefit everyone.

Incredible. At times dark and hard to read but there is wisdom in each chapter and honestly quite moving moments of humanity; grace, insight, and compassion we may not automatically attribute to people in a psychiatric hospital or prison. I may already be someone keen to consider the complexity of offenders but I defy even a person with the most black and white attitude to not be rinsed with a little grey upon reading.

A beautifully written book, full of compassion for those we often spare none for. It’s heartwarming to know that people like Dr Adshead exist in the world of forensic psychiatry. We often only see convicted criminals as the crimes that they have committed, but this glimpse into who they are before, during, and after their crimes is eye opening, and I’ll carry some of these stories (like Gabriel’s) with me forever.

Some horrible subjects are discussed but Dr. Glen Adshead and Eileen Horne treat every story with such intelligent insight. It is such a hopeful book for future reform to our prison system and also how such traumatic lives and experiences can turn around into something positive.

There is clinical discussion of uncomfortable topics so not for everyone and sometimes it was hard to read but worth the journey.
