Very funny look at the world of dating - liked the characters and the dips into the past. Hopefully this one will catch some attention due to it's retro theme :-)

A grin-a-minute modern Pygmalion that had me literally LOL'ing.

I absolutely loved this book. It started off a little slow for me, but was still enjoyable. About halfway through I completely fell in love with it. Was it predictable? Yes. But it was still adorable and funny and heartwarming. Now that I’ve finished it, I want a sequel! I want a TV show, or at least a Netflix movie! 10/10, definitely recommend for a fun & light pick-me-up.

Really good book overall! The story got going right away, but I realized that I was almost 100 pages in and there was no set up yet for the 'vintage guide' storyline yet, but it got there. Some parts were less dramatic than I thought they would be, like **SPOILER** Summer talking to Leo at the big party was kinda just glazed over instead of being a huge moment the story was leading up to.
I was worried in the beginning because I was having a really hard time liking Jess and didn't understand how anything she did would change my mind, but I did end up understanding her and liking her in the end. I do wish we would have gotten just a little bit more of Leo and Jess in the end.

So, I was initially attracted to this book because of the cover. Aaaaaadorable. It’s in one of my favorite color combos, and it has a vintage dressed chick on it. I dress in vintage repro myself the majority of the time, and I was really hoping this would be about a girl learning she loves that style too.
It wasn’t.
If I had to sum this book up in one word, it would be: cringy. For at LEAST the first half of the book, Jess is a selfish, self-indulgent, promiscuous lush, with the sole desire to be the drunken life of the party. That is literally her priority in life. She is unreliable, and embarrassing at every turn. I hated her. How she had the self discipline to be a decent writer was slightly baffling to me.
The only reason I gave this book even 3 stars was because it was well written and interesting, and I wanted to see how it all turned out. The last couple of chapters Jess becomes semi- decent. I mean, I would still never hang out with her if she were real, but she did grow and mature. I don’t think I’ll be reading any more from this author. She’s clearly not for me.

This was an easy holiday read. The concept of the book was cool, in that Jess and her Grandmother attempt to use old school etiquette and manners to make a man fall in love. Of course there is a shy sidekick, an arrogant but hot leading man, a boy on the side, a villain and an crazy book editor to round out the supporting character list. While some elements of this story were good fun, and quite humorous, I felt that Jess was not a particularly engaging character- she seemed immature and lost. I could see that the author was going for a Bridget Jones-esque vibe, but unlike Bridget, Jess's pratfalls and adventures felt contrived and at times unrealistic. This had potential to be a great bit of chick-lit but I think it was an average, and at times very familiar - entry into the genre.

Mean girl friends are one of the things I avoid at almost any cost. I can’t keep going enough to get to the point where the main story takes off, hopefully without Summer
