This book was ok. I think another pass by an editor would have made it much better. Things were left in that should have been cut in order to allow room to flesh other aspects out. I think the intended age group would really enjoy this one, though.

Such a lovely book reminds me of Manic Magee, very lyrical. Becuase it is framed as an adult looking back, pushes the boundaries of children's lit but does an amazing job.

Cammie just seemed like a spoiled brat to me this time, and I had a hard time dealing with her.

I liked this, but I didn't LOVE it. Def. 6th-7th grade material.

The story held my interest and I thought the setting was interesting. I was also glad that the book centered around female characters - strong, weak, damaged, healing - the whole gamut.

This book is a sweet young adult novel. There were some problematic characterizations and no attention paid to racial issues. On the other hand, the way the author dealt with Cammie's grief felt very relatable to me.

tfw one of your favorite childhood authors succumbs to both racist stereotyping and a shitty plot device

Loved this. Beautifully written historical fiction (but with a realistic tween girl voice), complex plot and characters, mentions of water ice—everything I'm looking for in a middle grade novel, basically. Made me want to reread [b:Maniac Magee|139463|Maniac Magee|Jerry Spinelli|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1395884800s/139463.jpg|3264295] and [b:Stargirl|22232|Stargirl (Stargirl, #1)|Jerry Spinelli|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1335947642s/22232.jpg|963221] and then read everything by Jerry Spinelli I haven't read yet.
