This book is beautiful and heartwarming. I love the idea of having a Thanksgiving in the woods. The illustrations are really beautiful and I think this will be a treasure in our family.

I absolutely adored the illustrations in this beautiful story that celebrates a unique tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving, literally in the woods. This story takes places on a farm in upstate New York where over 200 friends, family and neighbors gather together to celebrate the special holiday. I loved how they included a real life photograph of the family that inspired the story. If I lived on a farm with tons of property, or just in a wooded area, I would make this a tradition as well.

Cute, albeit repetitive, story inspired by a true event. Families, neighbors, and strangers gather together in upstate New York for Thanksgiving in the Woods.

A family in Upstate New York celebrates their Thanksgiving in the woods.
This book is so nice the drawings are beautiful and it's cool to see another way of spending Thanksgiving. It definitely makes me want to spend Thanksgiving in the woods!

I love this book. It's one of my favorite of this reading season.
This is based off a community that practices this each year. A family and community gather each year in the woods. The make bon fires and string up lights and tarps and bring all the food with them. Rain or shine, cold or warm, they all meet in the woods for the day and hang out, play, sing songs and build community together. I’m sure it’s hard work totting everything out in the woods and the food is probably on the cooler side, but this sounds amazing. I would love to try this.
The kids enjoyed the artwork and the story. They both gave this one 4 stars. How do we set this up so it happens. This is a great idea to spread everywhere. This even happens in New York State where it’s probably cold. Maybe just one year. The kids think this sounds like fun getting to play in the woods for a day. We would have to travel a ways to do that here in Baltimore.
Still, sounds lovely and I am glad they shared this with the world.

Thanksgiving in the Woods is about a boy and his family's Thanksgiving celebrztion in the woods of New York. The preface states that this is an actual event that takes place every year for about 200 people. The story is beautifully illustrated with pictures of family setting up wood planks for tables, hay bales for seats and tarps hung over branches to protect them from snow and rain. As the guests arrive they bring dishes to share, guitarsand recorders and someone builds a bonfire. They sing songs, eat a Thanksgiving feast of turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings and roast marshmallows for dessert.
What a beautiful story, even more beautiful because it's true. I would love to be a part of something like this. What wonderful memories they are making! I loved the illustrations and would actually rate this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I knocked off half a point because i was disappointed that at the end of the story there was no photo of the actual event. I think that would have added more credibility to the story and thrilled all of us who so much would like to be there in their midst!
