I’ve followed Matt’s fb page for years - not because I was a parent, but always found him funny. So when I had a baby this year I decided to read his book finally. It took 3 months… because trying to find time to read with an infant is HARD. I’m holding her in one arm while typing this with the other.
I write all that because I found this book to be the most accurate representation of parenthood yet. I know it’s geared more toward the father’s perspective, but as a new mom it rings just as true. My friends with kids are past the newborn stage and seem to have rose colored glasses about it now. Matt wrote it while living it and I felt heard. And was able to get a much needed laugh as well.
So I have a feeling I may single-handedly keep Mr. Coyne housed and fed because I’m buying this book for every friend and family member who announces they’re having a kid. This book made me feel like someone understood what I was going through while feeding at 2 am just praying for my kid to go the fuck to sleep.

Dummy: Parenting for the Inept and the Clueless is a hilarious and heart warming parenting book that, in my humble opinion, should be provided on the NHS to all new parents.
Unlike 99% of the other parenting books I've read Dummy doesn't take itself too seriously, it doesn't pretend to have all the answers and it won't make you feel like your making a hash of things; and that is the kind of book new parents need to read.
Matt Coyne has a fantastically approachable style that make this a swift and fun read. Also despite being a comedy book it is surprisingly informative and most importantly reassuring. The main thrust if the book being 'You might not be getting everything right but no-one else is and that is fine.'
If you only read one parenting book make it this one.

Fantastic book, thoroughly enjoyed it - cried, laughed, drank lots of wine whilst nodding vigorously and suddenly felt very glad that my children are past the vomit and night feed stage!

About to be an auntie and bought this for my brother. Picked it up to have a sneaky read through the intro before sending it to him and blasted through the whole thing. Brilliantly honest and funny.

The only problem I had with this book was I read it as my 9 month old was sleeping and I kept laughing loudly and waking him up. Delightful and hilarious book. A must for all new parents.

You should read everything in the book with a healthy dose of skepsis, as the writer tends to exaggerate. And he says that he got much less sarcastic with the birth of his son - then I cannot imagine the level of sarcasm he had before ;). Overall, it's however a very fun reading experience, and many things that are described in it ring true in a fellow first time father. Plus there are some valid recommendations in there, and the recommendation to take the myriad of recommendation books out there with a grain of salt and sometimes not that seriously (as they often contradict one another) is totally what I experience as well!
In summary, a fun book that challenges you to think critically and encourages you to find your own way of parenting - I wholeheartedly enjoyed it!

Maybe I’m just super into that dry, sarcastic, British sense of humor, but god did I love this book. I’m not a parent, but I work with babies/parents in a hospital and this is just so accurate. I laughed out loud while reading and was so sad when it was over. Truly a great, quick read.
