5 stars not because it was profound and the best writing, it is simply because I was immediately sucked in and proceeded to do absolutely nothing else until I finished it. Classic early Koontz. Glad I grabbed it for $1 at the bookstore.

Started well and really interesting sections throughout, but I’d pretty much guessed who the killer was at the beginning. About halfway through, things got super cliche and it was really just a case of ploughing through until I got to the end...

Okay, I didn’t remember that I’d already read this until the phrase “that’s positively saccharine”. I remember this because I had to look the word up, and then used it incessantly for weeks after. 😂 So this is a re-read; June 2019:
So I remembered some of the plot, but not much of it. I remembered the killer at some point about 2/3 of the way through. While this book is well-written, the fact that I read it probably not more than a year or two ago and didn't remember reading it probably says a lot. Not as memorable as his other books, but definitely twisted.

A thriller that wants to be a horror book. This one was a bit different for Koontz, with more focus on dialogue and frenetic pacing than what came before this. Looking at when it was written and then released, it seems to be a bridge between his older and newer work, and it is a fun read.

DNF at page five. The style was clunky to me and didn't seem to improve when I skimmed some chunks later in the book. I think I'm a bit Koontz-ed out.
