I enjoyed it a lot. I love the concept of pairing a cop who relies on her instincts with an AIDE (Artificially Intelligent Detective Entity) that excels at cold logic. As many know from experience, emotions can sometimes cloud judgment; while cold logic is effective, it can also be insensitive.

The team tries to solve two missing persons cold cases.

I appreciated the execution, the concise writing, the brisk pacing, and the situational humor. Highly recommended.

Regarding the audiobook narration, Rose Akroyd and Paul Mendez have done a great job here.

Human versus AI detective murder mystery
A prototype AI that can crunch numbers and view footage in a matter of seconds is brought in to help review cold cases. Designed by an anti-police scientist, Lock, the AI, is strapped (literally) to the lead detective, Kat, who is anti-AI. Approaching each case from opposite ends of the emotion-logic scale, Lock and Kat clash and clash again as they try to unravel the mystery behind similar missing disappearance cases.
There's a twist I did not see coming.
I can't wait to read book 2.

In the Blink of An Eye was my Neglected Faithful choice for January, This one hasn’t been on my TBR for that long compared to some of my other books but I have seen Jo Callaghan speak at least twice about this book and have met Jo and have it signed, so thought I’d better read it, especially as Human Remains, the third part in this series comes out in April!
This is one of the best thrillers I have read in a long time. I loved Kat as a DCS who returns to work after the death of her husband, and gets picked to lead a pilot programme, testing out how AI can help the police. She is paired with AIDE Lock whose job it is to enhance the police work and to use logic and it’s research skills to help solve some cold cases. The cases they look into involve the disappearance of two young men which before long they realise the cases are connected. AIDE is worn as a watch on Kat’s wrist but can also appear as a hologram.
This is very relevant at the moment as AI seems to be on the forefront of everyone’s mind. The thought of AI being part of our everyday lives genuinely scares me but I can’t deny the advantages of using AI in this context are huge. Callaghan is careful to show both the advantages (being able to analyse huge amount of data in seconds) and the disadvantages (not understanding social cues or having empathy) of using AI.
I really connected to Kat as a character, being a similar age and also parenting an 18 year old and all the challenges that entails!
A fast paced thriller that had me absolutely hooked, I loved it and am excited to read the next parts (Leave No Trace and Human Remains.) I listened to it on audio and can highly recommend - the narration was excellent.
