I struggled with this one, and it was only partly because The Count of Monte Cristo is my number one favorite book ever.

Loved: the djinn magic & the elements of Pakistani culture featured throughout

Liked: Dani & Noor (just wish we had more time with them)

Disliked: The beginning
when she was in the prison
was so slow-paced and then SO MUCH happened in the last 2/3 of the book that it felt rushed as a reader.
She forgave Maz within like three chapters which didn't make sense in the rushed narrative

This book was written quite well but was nothing special. I won’t rate it below 3 due to its technical ability but it pissed me off. It could have been so good, but it was somehow both too long and short. The characters did have enough time to flesh themselves out, nor were the character relationships well fleshed out. It didn’t feel believable, which sucks because I loved the bones of this book.

FOR SHE IS WRATH is absolutely a Monte Cristo retelling - but it is also so much more than that! Especially in the beginning, the author brings in much of what made the Count of Monte Cristo so compelling: the fight for escape, the unquenchable thirst for revenge, the friends made and lessons learned along the way. But what I appreciate about Varga's retelling is when she chooses to go farther, such as when she leaned into the back-and-forth of female friendship. (I loved Noor!!) Or when she included in her worldbuilding an indelible fantastic element through the use of a unique magic. The romance itself is swoon-worthy, with several striking lines and scenes. Overall, I greatly enjoyed the book and hope for a sequel -- perhaps Noor's??
