So far this isn't my favorite of this author's books. I'm interested enough to continue the series, but I'm not fully invested. The main character, Zenia, is very similar to Amaranth from her Emperor's Edge series, right down to the job and the attitude. Even the world is similar in a lot of ways, although in this world there is more magic and other fantasy races. I'm hoping that in the rest of the series, the world is fleshed out a little more and starts to feel more different.

Another book that surprised me positively.
Picked it up, after taking a break from The Familiar, which I started reading yesterday...that says a lot about how I feel about this highly anticipated book.
Well, anyway: I really liked it.
The plot was cool - I wished it was a bit longer - and I liked the writing and most of the characters. The FMC wasn't exactly my type but okay enough.
Seeing as it actually was short, it read more like a long Prologue/a short Prequel, so I'm excited for the next book in the series.

I really liked this book.
The characters made me smile and I want to know more about them and the new 👑 king. I love a good mystery so I'll read the rest of this series.

I enjoyed this! I read this through audio book for the most part. I think that definitely effected my rating. I never listen to audio books because I can't seem to concentrate. But reading the ebook while listening to the audio book really helped me. It's a promising start to a series. I always like the relationship dynamics in Buroker's books.

I am a fan of Lindsey Buroker, so I was excited when I found this audiobook offered for free on my audiobook app.
The story was semi-entertaining, but just about everything in the story was cliche. The hard-driving female character too focused on work to have a love life - until the handsome, whimsical, smart rich man comes into her life. Geez...what’s going to happen?

The books so far I've read of Lindsay Buroker's are like if romance had more genuinely interesting plot besides that.
Honestly I think all of her books are some degree of copaganda but I can't really expect better from an author who was in the military. I at least did like that the fruitlessness of war and xenophobia was addressed a bit here. And that the girl protagonist openly criticizes folks with class privilege.
