I hadn't heard of Leyendecker, had no idea he was Norman Rockwell's mentor, and didn't clearly understand what a big deal shirt collars once were. I like his art. Some of it is very much like Rockwell. Leyendecker is more sensual and vaguely sexual (also probably gay) and I can see why Rockwell is better remembered. Leyendecker was still wildly successful for about 20 years, enough to purchase a house worthy of being called an estate and throwing lavish parties for the stars of his day. There aren't many illustrators of any era who do well enough to become wealthy.
