Gaarder's 'Sophie's World' is one of my favorite books ever. So now, after finishing 'Maya', I can say I'm a fan of the author, not just one of his titles. While it didn't have the impact on me that 'Sophie's World' did/has, Maya is incredibly beautiful. Frequently, throughout the book, I would get so lost in the beauty of the Big Ideas postulated or the landscape intricately painted, that I would forget to pay attention to the 'plotting'.
Beautiful book.
Beautiful book.

I really enjoyed the slow philosophical nature of this book. Personally I would have preferred a straight novel rather than a story within a story but I can see how this adds additional meaning. This book reminds has the feel of the film "The man from Earth", which was great as well. I'm sure I'll read more by Gaarder in the future.

A bit like 'Sophie's World', this book consists of large chunky essays feeding the author information while interweaving strange exchanges in need of constant pondering. It was a little too dense for me.

There were some nice little cultural details relating to Fiji but other than that, most of this went right over my head.

At first I wanted to gave 2 stars, but as far I go trough the book It was more interesting. Also I found out that evolutional biology isn't my thing and that changed my life to the better.
I gave myself task to read all of his books and I found out few things after reading 3 of them : He has the same plot. Before the "Surprise Element“ the book can be kind of boring, but after that curiosity will gave you a power to read until the end.
