SpoilerEasily my least favorite Steinbeck to date. Did not understand the significance of the paisanos speaking anachronistically with thee and thou. Many similarities to Cannery Row: small, unchanging central CA fishing town with people scraping by however they can. The party at the end at Danny’s house was very similar to the party at Doc’s. I wish all of the “friends” being WW1 veterans played a more prominent role in the story.

Reads like a play almost-- maybe that's the intention? The plot follows a web starting at Danny and stretching out through connections to friends that all call Danny's house their home. They build community, tell stories, show their love for each other, hold each other  accountable, their lives intertwining interaction by interaction.

It felt like one of those awful sitcoms that relies on unbelievably moronic characters and a plot steeped in racial stereotypes and sexism. At least it is short.
