i rly rly liked the school, game, and the title story. i bought a little city and the glass mountain are also worth mentioning. the former is a good romp (man buys city, things go wrong) and the latter is formally really interesting (takes place over 100 numbered sentences).
such a strange, disquieting tone to all these. slyly funny, though you might feel bad for laughing. the stories i haven't named i could take or leave. because there's usually a steady pulse or idea that goes the distance in all or most of these, if you're not having a good time after a few pages, generally you won't have had a good time by the end of it.
i liked it tho, curious to read more barthelme

Read the titulating Colby-story as part of a course in narratology. Will definitely get back to Don Barthelme, starting with The Teachings of Don B. : a funny coincidence being that I am currently writing my thesis on the Teachings his title and blurb parodises.

Memorable Quotes
Some of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby
“...although hanging Colby was almost certainly against the law, we had a perfect moral right to do so because he was our friend, belonged to us in various important senses, and he had after all gone too far.”

Wonderfully inventive short fiction. Funny with a reflexive depth to it. Only slightly removed from conceivable reality in occurrences, but emotively faithful. The eponymous story, 'The School', and 'The Balloon' stand out for me.

A collection of strange and very unusual short stories. I especially liked the title story "Some Of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby" but I liked all of them. They walk the line of dread, dark humor and nonsense quite well.
