When Hazel’s father dies, she returns to her quiet hometown—a place where secrets lurk beneath the surface and rumors spread like wildfire. But his death is only the beginning. As buried truths start to unravel, Hazel is forced to confront a fractured family and a past she may not fully understand. With new revelations emerging every day, she can’t shake the feeling that something is deeply wrong. Is she imagining things, or is there more to her family’s story than she ever knew? And as strange events unfold around Mirror Lake, one question haunts her—how much of the past was meant to stay buried?

It took me a while to get into it. Didn’t really connect with some of the characters in the Holt family. Lots of twists I couldn’t predict though!

As a huge fan of Megan Miranda this did not disappoint. It was a little slow at first, but for me she is the queen of the wonderfully paced twisty thriller.
I enjoyed the flashbacks/ back stories as well as the current day mystery that makes this story such a standout. Miranda has the wonderful gift of weaving all of these things together that gives the reader such a connection to the characters.

I’ve always loved Megan Miranda’s books and this was no exception. She tied everything together in the end and I had no idea who did it.

Thank you to Simon and Schuster , NetGalley and Megan Miranda for allowing me to review this eARC and provide honest feedback.

All the suspense. Had me hooked in the first third of the book! Had me wanting to go back and reread parts knowing the current reveals. Would reco for a quick, intense thriller.

It was a fine story. I was pretty sure I had the antagonist figured out about 2/3 through the story. Turns out that I was right.

I wasn't disappointed that I figured it out. The story was fairly predictable for a thriller. I enjoyed that idea of what a drought would reveal in an area not typically associated with large scale crime in the way that Las Vegas is.

The writing was fine, not really standing out. There was a lot of internal monologuing that got repetitive. Most of the relationships were described only superficially, not really diving into the why of how people feel about real other, just telling us the emotions. It felt like there was a layer of the story missing.

Not great. Not terrible.

I feel like you just can't go wrong with Megan Miranda. She's a strong writer, and the most memorable parts of her books aren't the ending-- and I love that! Hazel is a well-rounded character, and the mystery of her mother abandoning her was interesting and well thought out.

I think I liked All the Missing Girls better than this, but, as of right now, I will always read a Megan Miranda! You know what you're going to get-- suspense and a unique story.

The lake house setting in a small town where everyone knows each other. Dredging up old secrets. Literally and figuratively. Daughters really are different.
