A darker story for kids in the style of a fairy tale. The bad guys cheat and lie and fail, and the hero is kind and caring and succeeds.  The illustrated sidebars add a touch of humour and fourth-wall breaking and Pullman writes in a conversational tone that never patronises his audience. The story is creepy without being scary, making it good for younger kids who want to read more mature books.
