In a small town in Germany, the local storyteller Fritz begins a share a tale about the Prince and Princess, their only child, and a master clock maker named Dr. Kalmenius. Partway through the story, Dr. Kalmenius himself arrives; he is so terrifying that everyone leaves except Karl, an apprentice clock maker, who is distraught because he will fail his final task as an apprentice. When Karl accepts a mechanical gift from Dr. Kalmenius, it sets of a chain of events involving himself, Fritz, Gretl, and a young clockwork boy.

A spooky and mysterious children’s offering from Pullman. I’m not sure it really comes together very well at the end, but the journey is interesting, anyway.

A great read for kids and adults to share. Clockwork is magical and slightly shocking. The narrator likens stories and characters to clockwork figures. Once set in motion they must keep moving to fulfill their purpose and bring the story to an end.

A fun to read short story about placing all pieces of the puzzle on the board and watching everything fall into place. It's a little play on destiny, everything is already written and now its up to us to watch how it unfolds, as nothing is going to change the outcome now that everyone has done their part in (so to speak) winding up the pieces and watching everything as it unfolds as a result to that.

The plot was very interesting and when you start the story you have no idea it will end the way it does. There are a few lessons in the book - putting hard work into something often reaps rewards whereas the opposite can end badly, as well as your choices all have consequences.
A very interesting read.

“For every once upon a time there must be a story to follow, because if a story doesn't, something else will, and it might not be as harmless as a story.”

I was ALL about this book. It's twenty kinds of strange and awkward and I loved every minute of it. Recommended for fans of dark fairy tales as it draws inspiration from there while being fully its own beast. (Student book club)
