This is the 4th book in the Alanna the Lioness series, and while I LOVE the series, my big caution for reader's advisory is that although Alanna starts off as a 10-year-old in the first book, by the 4th book, she's about 18 or so and having sex (not graphic descriptions, but it's mentioned). So I hesitate when recommending it to kids, especially if I think the parents might be at all conservative because if you read the 1st book, you'll want to read all 4, and in my opinion, it's best if kids are at least within a few years of the age of the main character(s) of a book. The tricky part is often convincing a 16-year-old (or older) to read anything featuring 10-year-olds. Much easier to get adults to read the series, really. Well, YA fiction fans, at any rate.

4 stars only because of Faithful- not so much the death, although that would have been nice if it 1) didn't happen and 2) wasn't practically glossed over, but more because of the epilogue's treatment of Faithful vs Liam. Alanna has known Faithful most of her life at this point. Alanna had known Liam for a relatively short span of time. No offense to Liam (I liked the character) but I think more than a paragraph could have been devoted to Faithful's passing (and that paragraph wasn't even DIRECT), especially when there is a lot more on Alanna's grief over Liam. I just.. yeah. I'm a cat person so I suppose this is the obvious response from me, but still.
So MINUS that one thing, this was a fantastic end to the Song of the Lioness quartet, and I am both super sad to leave this part of the Tortall experience and excited to see what else Pierce has to bring! Reading "Wild Magic" next. :)

A great end to a great series. Looking forward to starting the rest of the Tortall universe books.
