Reading this book, I thought it was slow and quite boring and then after I finished, I thought about it at least once a week for a full year. Amazing book if you're in your 30s or older.

Ich mochte den aufwändigen Stil und war bereit, über die kaputte Formatierung des E-Books wegzusehen*. Aber als nach etwa 20 Prozent immer noch gar nichts passiert war, habe ich angefangen, in Goodreads-Bewertungen nachzuforschen. Es gibt offenbar wirklich keinerlei Handlung. Das war mir dann zu wenig (zusätzlich ist die beschriebene Ereignislosigkeit ziemlich identisch mit meinem und Aleks' Leben in Schottland, und das kenne ich ja alles schon).

* Ich vermute, es sind gedichtartig gesetzte Stellen im Original, die aber leider auf eine Weise erzeugt wurden, die im E-Book nicht funktioniert.

An odd little book. Neither plot, nor character driven. Instead, this book seems more like a poetic meditation on changes and deterioration of nature, a home, seasons, a vehicle. Not a bad book, but certainly a different kind of book.

Beautiful and contemplative. Sara Baume’s poetic novel narrows in on the small observations of a less than ordinary life.

Poetic writing but no real plot and we don’t get to know the two characters very well

September 2024, DNF at 40%. I wanted to really like this quiet novel about Belle and Sigh, a couple who meet and slowly draw into their own world of just themselves over the years, but there wasn’t enough developing on the page of the duo to either feel like an invited guest or a secret voyeur. (Kind of felt like a story prompt or an assignment.)

Meditative and, I think, allegorical. The devotion of the couple, which does not want by exposure, is powerful and very very understated.

Bell en Sigh vluchten uit de stad en nestelen zich in een huisje aan de voet van een berg. Ze zonderen zich met de weken, maanden, jaren meer en meer af van hun vorige leven, hun vrienden en familie. Wat overblijft is een klein en eenvoudig leven met hun twee honden, het huis  en de natuur om hen heen. Er gebeurt quasi niets. Alleen de tijd verstrijkt en dat wordt aan de hand van observaties van alledaagse en onbeduidende dingetjes beschreven: het busje dat alsmaar vuiler wordt, de muizen die hun weg vinden door de kieren in het huis waar ook de wind doorheen fluit, de spullen die ze verzamelen, de honden die ouder worden ...

Nul plot, maar intense en aandoenlijke beschrijvingen. Poëtisch ja, maar niet op een arty-farty manier. En traag, tergend traag. Soms bijna saai zelfs, maar toch gaat er een bezwerende kracht van uit. Héél bijzonder. ♡♡♡

PS: Ik begon met de oorspronkelijke versie, Seven Steeples. Natuurbeschrijvingen vind ik vaak lastig in het Engels, dus ben ik toch maar de NL versie uit de bib gaan halen.

I’m all for an examination of a quiet life in a novel, and the writing is beautiful, but there is almost no plot here.
