While reading the first book of the Marcus Didius Falco series, I thought I just had to get used to the clipped style of writing by the author, with lots of banter going on. But a quarter down into this second book, I lost track of the story, because the reading itself asked too much effort. So, I gave up.

Reliable story. I lose the plot regularly because of the character names. Falco drives me mad with his bad decisions, but luckily his heart is in the right place

Finally finished!
& after a page turning start this book really dragged for me, except when the wonderful Helena Justina was on the page.
The book did rescue itself with an ending that had both excitement & a bit of humour, but the story really needed a ruthless pruning to make a much tighter story.
I have more of Davis's books but I haven't decided if I will continue with the series.

Great mystery set in Ancient Rome. Falco's rugged realism and sarcasm is refreshing and adds to the the multi-layered mystery

Over tortuous plot but the interactions of the characters and the 1930’s Rome with echoes of AnkhMorpork are a delight.

Another fun adventure in ancient Rome! Sadly Libby doesn't have the rest of the series so I'll have to pause Falco's adventures here.
