There are so many things to like about this book. The multiple POV and short chapters kept me interested even when I hated the characters. Some you hate because you can tell they're just terrible people and others you hate because you feel so much pity for them. But you're also wondering how all of these people are connected to Phoebe's death? Let me tell you...when I figured it out (which was not until like 93%) I legit gasped out loud. It was so well done.

The way these characters' lives are weaved together makes the fact that this is a debut novel so impressive to me. When I read books like this, I always wonder how the heck authors plan the book out and keep everything organized.

WOW what a debut novel!!

Small town drama with *lots* of baggage from high school, this dual POV mystery thriller gripped me from the prologue. The characters were complex, flipping from 10 years ago to the present day, you are intertwined with their thoughts and feelings, with grief, longing, and loyalty at the forefront of this incredible storytelling.

Although a bit of a slow burn, I was sucked in by the โ€˜did they, didnโ€™t theyโ€™ aspect of this story. There were so many whatโ€™s ifs and second guessing of the truth, the borderline between real and not real (or in Beccas case, straight up coo-coo lol)

There were a few bumps along the way, getting background characters confused, the timelines and wording sometimes made me have to re read a paragraph, but overall a non stop page turner. My jaw was on the floor the last 50 pages when everything comes together, Tate makes you wait for the shock

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an early copy of this book! Here is my honest review:

I have very mixed feelings about this book. I feel like there were elements that gave it the potential to be a great thriller - mystery but it fell short. My hopes were high since I was pulled into the world through the prologue and was pretty intrigued by what I had first understood of the plotline, however, nothing kept me wanting to continuously read throughout it until the reveal of what happened the night of the accident at the end (which I didn't expect but felt it rushed to the ending soon after). I found myself digesting only a few chapters at a time, similar to how I consume TV episodes. Speaking of TV shows, I couldn't help but see this book as a CW or ABC family show (like Pretty Little Liars, Riverdale, etc.) which isn't necessarily a bad thing. What was bad for me was how lost I would feel about particular reveals and details of the story due to the constantly changing POVs and reality versus delusions/hallucinations. On the other hand, I think Tate wrote the characters dealing with loss, grief, and forms of mental stress in a way that seemed genuine, and saw that this book was inspired by losing someone herself. This novel has things going for it and I really wanted to like it but ultimately, it just wasn't for me.
