Another fast-paced, entertaining and enjoyable read from Mr Gemmell.
Full of engaging characters who are wonderfully written, especially Druss, who just elevates any book from good to great by his presence alone.
The main character, Olek Skilgannon the Dammed, is also a great character with multiple facets which are slowly revealed throughout the story, some from the main plotline and some as flashbacks to his earlier life.
The scope of the story has many twists and turns, as well as surprises and is a definite page-turner.

I have really enjoyed revisiting this book/series. I chose this series as part f my reading challenge for this year, and as a buddy read with one of my colleagues. Even though the first book in the series was released in 1984 (and the latest in 2000) the series has pretty much stood the test of time. It is a fantastic action adventure fantasy- with superb characters and brilliant world building, which brings the whole story/series to life.
I have fond memories of discovering this series and excitedly awaiting each new instalment. My reading buddy hadn’t read the series before, but has also enjoyed discovering David Gemmell’s work/s.

Pretty good as heroic fantasy goes. Lots of sword fights, a little romance, some humour - I laughed a couple of times, but I thought the heroes were a bit too cool and one-dimensional.

I started to loose interest about half way through and had to stay with it - if I had put it down for more than a day, I probably would not have bothered to finish it.

I really enjoyed this book. I can't wait to read more about Skillgannon. I like this much better than Waylander which I couldn't get into.

A book a very nearly put down. I don't hate it nor do I think it was great. If you can get past the first 100 pages, it's a decent read but did not motivate or entice me to read any others in the series.

Such a good book. I'd forgotten how much this linked together characters and scenes from the other books in the Drenai series. Brilliant.

Worth the battle.

I must admit I struggled to get through this one, but I am so glad I persevered! As always with Gemmell’S writing, it is the characters he creates that really capture you, and spur you on. This is my first Drenai novel, and I’m so excited to start my next one!
