I had high hopes for this novel as I am a huge fan of Stackpole and Allson's X-Wing novels. This... is not those novels. We spend entirely too much time slowly developing - and I do mean slowly - our disparate characters who eventually come to make up Alphabet Squadron. And yet for all that time spent with them, Two weeks after I read the novel I can only name two of the five members, and only describe 4 of them. After all this time spent with them, planning and waiting and practicing, and a couple of low stakes missions that should have given me a character or two to root for, we finally start to get the novel I wanted to read. The last 80 pages of the hardcover - approximately 20% of the novel - is more like the novel I wanted to read. It was too little too late. I may check out the next book from the library, but this one is not going on my shelf. The guest appearance of a hero of the Rebellion was fitting and welcome, but a minor note in the overall arc of the book.

This novel is one of my favorite books within the current canon, and possibly within all of the Star Wars books I've read. Freed tells a compelling story with each character within "Alphabet Squadron" having their own arc. The mysteries as to what Caern Adan was up to, as well as what the main protagonist was lying about were compelling mysteries, and made me excited to read the book and figure out what happened.
