A stock detective and ranch foreman investigate rustling and a murder that's dismissed as a suicide. There's a twist.

Too short to be a good novel and too long to be a good novella. This is NOT Brokeback Mountain CSI, that comp is terrible. This is a story about two gay cowboys who know what they want -- and that is bareback with cooking oil. The spice is hot but I didn't feel like we had any time to get to know the two main characters, stock detective Everett Dawson and cowboy Lawrence Jackson (which, by the way, great character names). It feels like testing the waters for different kinds of stories as Tal began to move away from political/military thrillers. Skippable, but not unenjoyable, especially if you like cowpoking (with cooking oil).

*holding up my phone with the Kindle app open like an Oscar*

And I'd just like to thank *chokes up* Hell and Gone *sniffle* for being a GOOD book. For being the best romance novel I've read in a while. For *a single tear slips down my cheek* having characters with personalities and ROMANCE, which is tragically lacking from so many of these books. Law and Everett's personalities were a bit one note, but they genuinely seemed to bring what the other person needed. I liked that they fit well together.

While the book isn't that long, it works! The pacing is pretty good, the characters are likable, there was an intriguing larger story going on, the characters didn't spend all of their time over analyzing each other's actions like insecure losers, and not everything revolved around everyone's d****. THANK YOU TAL BAUER.

Though the mystery plot was predictable, that didn't impede my enjoyment of the book: I had a good time from beginning to end. There was poetic prose. The writing was great! And if you read my last thousand or so reviews, you'd know that I don't hand out compliments lightly! Woo!
