Any excellent long view of American Religious History. The tree authors did an admirable job tracing the different religious groups in the United States, and tried to look beyond just Protestant and Christians groups to Native Americans, Africans and African-Americans and beyond. However, because they were covering so much ground, the book felt like a series of thesis statements about different religious movements, without digging into any of important incidents or debates. At the end of reading this book I now want to dig in and read 15 more books about different topics raise here.

Such an ingenious volume, three in one really, tackling three centuries and more of American religious life. At times it might seem too breezy, but that is the point, as it pushes you, the reader, to see the bigger patterns. American religion has a unique shape and movement. So much of American religion is outsized, too, and to see everything from a wide perspective is a much needed help, pretty much a spiritual endeavor in its own right. So appreciate this work and its authors who are distilling their life's work so the everyday student of religion can enjoy it.

Really quite informative and written simplistically enough that it's easy to not get bogged down in the details.

I read this book for the first time in 2008. I just re-read it while teaching a survey class.
