Boy, L. Frank Baum was really phoning it in at this point, wasn't he? This was a real snooze of a book. Virtually nothing happens except Ozma has a birthday party. That's it. Not his best effort by a long shot.

I remember reading that Baum, as he also states in his introductions, didn't want the OZ series to carry on for a long time - that he had other projects in mind. You can feel his reluctance in The Road to Oz. It just doesn't shine like the first three OZ books did, and it is even worse than Dorothy and the Wizard - luckily, I know that the series picks up again from here. This walking around, trying to get to OZ and meeting strange creatures and countries along the way just isn't that engaging. Especially when the plot climax is considered to be the troupe finally reaching OZ, only to be introduced to all of the characters we already know. And then there are the inconsistencies. Did Dorothy forget that Ozma checks in on her at the 4:00 hour every day? And the Wizard's piglets - there are 8 of them because Dorothy's cat ate one. I don't know - this one just didn't strike great interest with me.

2018 Reading Challenge- Read a book with a location in the title.
I liked this book much more than I have enjoyed the previous few books. I thought the story was better developed and the characters more the focus, which was nice. This is by no means a perfect book but you have to admire Baum's creativity and imagination (or ability to take ideas from the imaginations of his readers at the time and flesh them out into a full book).

I am a huge fan of the Wizard of Oz and Mr. Baum, however, this is a very disappointing story. Just like in the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy again finds herself magically lost and again collects a motley crew of travel companions on her way to the Emerald City. Instead of the tin man, scarecrow and lion, this time it is the Shaggy Man, Button Bright and Polychrome, the rainbow's daughter. Unfortunately, with the exception of Button Bright, who's dumb innocence is endearing, these characters are not developed enough to compete with the likes of the scarecrow, tin man and lion. Neither are their adventures. Baum actually doesn't take them on any adventures, he simply has them walking down a road on the way to Oz and meeting increasingly crazy characters along the way, some so crazy it's not wondrous and fantastical, it's simply ridiculous. Despite my disappointment with this story, I still marvel at how a children's book written over 100 years ago is still pertinent and modern today, now that is truly amazing!

The introductions and the parties, and exits were boring. I kept thinking I read all of this book for this?
