My two little sisters (11 and 9 years old) loved these books and so did I.

I missed this sequel to Gone-Away Lake as a child. It certainly doesn't lose anything from being read decades later. I think what draws me in is the excitement of exploration and discovery, the relationships and simply just being set in a simpler time. I love the way the children make their own fun, enjoy being outside and just playing. Although I never had any old houses to explore, there were things that I could identify with from my own childhood.

I read the Gone Away books with my 4th grader and we both immensely enjoyed them. They're so wholesome and full of quirky characters! We liked the bit of mystery that was in the second book, and the old house with lots of strange corners to explore. These books are great read-alouds for the family. Just pure fun and nostalgia.

Completely charming on audio. I still want to live at Gone-Away, but probably with electricity.

sort of like the first book was an idealized summer adventure i would've liked to have had as a kid, the sequel was sort of an idealized adventure i would like to have now. sure, the children were there and doing their kid thing, but mostly i kept thinking, "um, please can this all happen to me? i would very much like to purchase a shambling house in the middle of practically nowhere for a tiny song and discover that it is filled with antiques and curiosities and treasures that i will discover, as i go about the happy task of cleaning and remodeling and making it all so to-die-for that i will have to quit my city job and move to a small town where i will divide my time between writing for the local paper and penning the great american novel." i mean, seriously. where do i sign up?

After their previous summer adventures at Gone-Away Lake, Portia, Foster, and Julian return for another set of new ones.

I sure wish I knew what I did with my copy of Gone Away Lake -- I know I used to have one and that I liked it a lot. This is a fun tale of children running wild during the summer of a bygone time. I could wish for a childhood like this, but it's a little late! Anyone liking this book would also enjoy Enright's Melendy family books.

Cute, but not quite as gripping as the first one.

Very good. It may have even been as good as the first one.
