I enjoyed this diary and I loved the narration. I only wish there was more actual witchcraft. I understand that it’s a true story though so I can’t be too picky here.

Wow! Such a story! It gives real insight into how witches and women were viewed at that time. The only bad thing I can say is the ending. Not that it was a bad ending but it was one that made me feel incomplete. I do however like the fact that we don't know. It also gave me hope for Mary. If she didn't fully finish writing her journal then she may have been okay.

Mary Newbury is forced to leave her home in England after her grandmother, a healer, is tried and hanged for practicing witchcraft.
With the help of a woman who turns out to be her mother, Mary boards a ship to America with a group of Puritans also bound for the New World. Mary soon realizes that she is in just as much danger in her new home.
She keeps a secret diary that begins, "I am Mary. I am a witch." Mary's fascinating story unfolds in her own words.
Excellent. I just ordered the sequel!

An enjoyable quick read. My main problem is it was all build up for the second book which I don’t particularly want to read. Characters were a bit forgettable, but overall interesting read.

I first read this book when I was in my early teens. I loved it then and I still love it now. I really enjoy a good historical fiction novel and this is a great one for YA readers. The writing is very well done. It is descriptive and a quick read. I thoroughly enjoyed that it is written in first person like a diary. This book isn’t fast paced or full of action. It doesn’t have a love triangle or a romance (that while isn’t necessary is still there). That’s why I love this book. It doesn’t fall into the YA cliches that we have now and it feels real. The fantasy/magic involved in this book isn’t spells and incantations or ouija boards. It’s herbs and healing knowledge and magic that is old and ingrained into this earth. This book reads like a journal of someone who could have actually lived.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to any fan of historical fiction or fantasy novels. It’s a fast read and one that you can curl up with on a rainy day and just enjoy. I know I’ll come back and read it again someday.

A simple, but exciting read! Good characters, well-written. Nostalgic, for me!

Fabulous journal book
This is a beautiful but haunting first hand account similar to the crucible in style. The telling of Mary's tale is relatable to most woman with minds and tongues of their own. Strength of character and nice development of others made this quick read one I couldn't out down. Read in a day and thoroughly enjoyed
