Ok first things first. This was a completely clean romance.
No sex. Not even a fade to black moment. And no cuss words either.
Usually I’m disappointed by that because I’m of the mind that the more steam the better the book.
But.
Though, I think it would’ve added to the book, I wasn’t all that disappointed.

The story and characters really carried everything.
I loved getting to know all the people of Shiloh Springs.
It was sweet and there was some danger and some humor.
I think I’ll be looking into reading the next book in the series.
I’m excited to see what happens with Tessa’s sister Beth.
So cute.

Could have been better

This small town romance with a side of light danger had a promising premise but the execution fell flat. Tessa moves to small town Shiloh Springs to teach elementary school. After the unexpected death of her parents and a stalker ex-boyfriend, she needed the change. Rafe is the town sheriff and the son of the oldest and largest family in town. Rafe and Tessa have instant chemistry and attraction and begin spending time together. The story included some sweet moments, chuckles, supportive friends and family, and painful pasts. Unfortunately, the writing was clunky and had multiple grammatical and factual errors. In addition, the MCs spent little time together and lacked dimension which made it hard to connect to them. 2.5 stars.

This novella is book 1 in Kathy Ivan’s Texas Boudreaux Brotherhood.

This was a fairly low angst, small town, & closed door romantic suspense. I liked the burgeoning relationship between Rafe and Tessa. The Boudreaux family is huge and I love how they welcomed Tessa to the town and family.

I do think the world building, especially the introduction of so many people, overwhelmed the development of the mystery/suspense and the romance plots. Combined with repetitive writing left me wanting more substance to what should have been the main focus.

Overall a easy and quick listen. Now that (I hope) the background has been established I’m interested in continuing to see if future books offer more development.

Narration:
This was my first time listening to both Alex Knox and Tieran Wilder. They were a good fit for the characters and writing. I enjoyed both of their performances.

Narration note: There were some production issues - long breaks in the middle of paragraphs. These gaps kept making me think that the playback was stopping for no reason.

This was a quick read–I literally didn’t put it down and didn’t realize how fast I’d been reading until we were in the midst of the third act event and I checked the percentage on my kindle! I absolutely love the Boudreau family–I want more of them, especially with how many different backgrounds they all have! I just need to know more about them all. Rafe’s story absolutely broke my heart. Tessa is the sweetest and fit right in in her new town. They’re v sweet together! There were a few parts that felt a bit rushed//jumped a little farther ahead than I might have expected, so I felt it took me out of the story for a second when it would happen because I would wonder if I had missed something. As a heads up: there also isn’t any spice, which isn’t a bad thing to me–I just didn’t realize it ahead of time, so I was a bit surprised. Overall I enjoyed this one, it had some good suspense to it, and still has me intrigued about the Boudreau family!

A good short read

The instant attraction between Rafe and Tessa is sweet but the storytelling of this book drew me in and made be want to read about the couple. Ms. Patti, her huge family, and a close knit small town make entertaining supporting characters leading into a bit of mystery. A predictable story was made better by good writing. Well worth the read.
