This short novella was a disappointment. I really like all of Steve Robinson's other books, but this one was simply flat. The characters had to dimension to them, the background was blah. I'm used to the author bringing his worlds to life, setting out the colors, scents, population but here, there was none of that. It's an easy read, you will get done with it in a matter of a couple of hours, and you can read it as a standalone, because there is very little reference to any events that led to JT being in his current situation. It was just...meh.

I definitely didn't realize this was a mid-series book, so there was a lot of backstory that was referenced that I missed. But otherwise, I didn't find the main characters all that relatable and the sections set in Victorian England bordered on maudlin.

This is an entertaining little genealogical mystery with interesting characters to add to the series.
