I really liked this one. The characters each had a distinct personality and their dynamics was enjoyable to read.
The writing style and prose were great.
The story was well paced and does not fall into the trap of having too many plot threads.
However, there were some things that I didn't like.
Since the Nizhoni is a chosen one, a lot of what she did with her powers was kind of effortless.
I also thought this book was too short. While it makes relatively good use of the time it has, but I feel like there was not enough time to flesh out the little things.
For example, I was really interested in Nizhoni's relationship with her dad. It was clear that while he loved his daughter, he worked way too much and didn't pay close enough to his kids. I feel this could have been fleshed out more if the book was longer, or if it wasn't a standalone. Nizhoni's dad may not have been a bad guy, but he still emotionally neglected his children for years. Same with Nizhoni's mother. I don't think either of her parents should get to say sorry and promise to do better. I would have loved to see them earn Nizhoni's trust over time.
I also didn't like how some stuff happened "off screen".
The last thing I didn't like was how the ending didn't seem to have any consequences. It was too quick and clean. The Monsterslayers are all freed from the Lost and Found without Nizhoni having to really sacrifice anything (and quite frankly even if she had sacrificed being a Monsterslayer it would not have been a sacrifice with much emotional weight). Her mother is alive. And her father seems like he'll be a better guy now that he knows his wife is alive. This ending was practically gift wrapped up with a bow.

This book was not for me, but I'm deciding to not give it a star rating because I am not the intended age group. It's connecting to its intended audience, and that's the most important thing.
Graphic: Abandonment
Moderate: Bullying, Violence, and Injury/Injury detail
