At the beginning I found myself pushing to read through this book, a bit slow for my liking. But once you get to his journey into the jungles of South America it turned fantastic. The description, the poet essence of it, and the plot itself were great. It shows the nature of the human soul, the exploitation of the jungles and the people that exploit them, and the vicious circle of that corrupt system. I knew little about the subject and gave very little, if any, thought about this topic.
I would recommend this book.
I would recommend this book.

As the title says, this book is structured as a vortex, the absence of defined chapters bring you deeper and deeper in the madness of the journey and the jungle. It is in first person and the protagonist is not lovable in the least, but he does a good job in collecting stories from all these people he meets, reporting the conditions of Llaneros, Amazonian Natives and rubber tappers. While the characters are mostly fictional, the events are not, making it even more dramatic and impactful.
Overall was an informative and interesting read, if heavy, but the protagonist is loathsome, and I couldn't wait to finish hearing is whining and contempt.

Naturalism isn't my thing it seems. Also pretty tired of the classic "man finds himself in nature" theme, although they obviously end up swallowed by the jungle here. I had to start it twice to fully get what was going on, too.
