I was inspired to read this after watching the animated movie The Secret World of Arriety, which I hadn't known was based on this series. If I'd read this as a child I probably would have loved it. It's otherwise a very sweet story, though a little dated. I couldn't help wishing the story had been more like the movie.

Gifted to me by a friend to read while recovering from surgery, the perfect read for right now ! Super cozy and wholesome, I really enjoyed it and wish I’d had it as a kid. Something about it seems sad, I’m not sure if it’s intentional. Pod made me think a lot about my dad, and almost seemed like his character was a comment on overworking and labor of men. There was also surprisingly almost a class system among the borrowers which I found really entertaining in an ironic sort of way. I think this is a wonderfully written book and that touches on issues that it may not be seen for, while also being really lovely.

Descriptive writing is used throughout the entire book. Sometimes the details are too much, it becomes restrictive to the imagination and dragging to the story in general. Expect many architecture, furniture, and fabric jargons. It's unbelievable it's written for kids because there are a LOT of unfamiliar words, get yourself a dictionary.
The suspense and thriller scenes are very well written. The themes of the confine and freedom of Arrietty is beautiful and can be observed by word choice and description. It has its sense of humor, sometimes. Chapter 18 - 19 honestly my favorite chapters. I absolutely LOVE the complicated relationship of Arrietty and Homily. I love when the boy and Arrietty's parents found solidarity with each other, I wish I could stop time there :')
