I saw the live-action show on netflix (which was quite the experience) and just had to read the books. The show promised a lot and the book did not disappoint. While the book is objectively not the greatest, I still couldn't help but giggle and kick my feet the whole time. Let's be fair, none of us are here for the ghost-hunting or the mystery, we all just want to see these two idiots get their shit together and admit they're in love xD

I've been meaning to re-read this series now that all of the volumes are out and I've bought them; mostly because having to wait for each new release left me forgetting where the last volume left off each time. I'm happy to report that it's still entertaining on a re-read

and has some delicious re-read value as to why Lan Wangji acts the way he does around Wei Wuxian

.

Unfortunately I can't rate it much higher because:

a) There's a lot of instances where the story flashes back to past events but the transition between past and present is clunky and left me scratching my head trying to figure out what happened where and when (even with a timeline of everything explained to me).

b) This is an extremely minor nitpick but there are so many instances Wei Wuxian is described as laughing or cackling in response to a lot of situations. This wouldn't be so bad if it was one or two situations but I feel like it's overdone to the point it feels like if anything mildly amusing happens, he'll be cackling like a hyena.

Very fun! This book was recommended to me by a close friend and I’m glad I actually took the recommendation (I often don’t get around to things that have been recommended to me). It was much better than I expected, I started out not liking the casual writing style that much but it really grew on me throughout the book. It’s definitely a slow burn but I’m obsessed with them and can’t wait for my library hold to come through on the second book!

look. the writing is not my cup of tea. the pacing, the introduction to the world building and to the characters are imperfect. but the characters took my breath away and I haven't been able to think about anything else since. I had to order the rest of the books immediately and I can't wait to receive them. I literally cannot wait. my brain is broken, send help.
I already know this story is gonna be something extraordinary

This book was very good and I loved it. Sometimes though, the translation seemed off and some sentences did seem to not make complete sense. But overall, I really liked reading it and after putting it off for half a month, I was right back and could follow along where I had left off.
I love MXTX's writing style, it does feel unique, though it looks like it is sometimes too much telling the story instead of showing it, but luckily it doesn't put me off.
Loved reading this novel after waiting a long time!
