I have no idea how I missed this book for so long. It is the kind of quasi - mythological fantasy that I adore. The book had a kind of Bronze Age flair that was refreshing. I could see clear influences on both Tolkien and Terry Pratchett.

This collection of short stories didn't do much for me. Some of them were interesting. Most of them were evocative. Most of them felt ungrounded. Most of them were boring.

This is more like a collection of environment and character descriptions which combine into a mythology, which is sort of cool, but I prefer the more modern way of world-building through plot and characters.

This isn't terrible and some of the writing is truly beautiful, but I would have trouble recommending this to anyone who isn't an aspiring fantasy author or something.

Really good read, loved the concept, content and tone. Really good world-building, nice arc going through from the beginning to the end of everything. Generally an uplifting book, very powerful mythical feel, like this could be a real ancient belief system.

Interesting seeing the apparent influence of ancient Egyptian culture, which to lots of authors around this time seemed to serve as inspiration to some extent.

Some nice quotes (the whole thing was great and very quotable/re-readable):
'Thy life is long, Eternity is short'
'There is an eternity behind thee as well as one before. Hast thou bewailed the aeons that passed without thee, who art so much afraid of the aeons that shall pass?'
'And still men slew men. And I came at last to a time when men set their yoke no longer upon bests but made beasts of iron. And after that did men slay men with mists.'
