This is only the second Louisa May Alcott book I've read, but I enjoyed it quite a bit more than [b:Little Women|1934|Little Women (Little Women, #1)|Louisa May Alcott|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1309282614s/1934.jpg|3244642]. I definitely want to read the sequel.

Yuck. So sentimental and didactic.

As Rose grows up her family pushes her to strive to be a better person. She learns to love and have fun.

On the one hand, I love this book.

On the other hand, have you ever read Little Women and thought, you know, this is good, but it's just not PREACHY and MORALISTIC enough for me? If you have, then Eight Cousins is the book for you! (Cigar smoking, vanity, corsets, even *gasp* novel reading!)

Rose is orphaned and immediately plunged into her extended family. Her parents are barely alluded to again. From now on, it is Uncle Alec hours 24/7.

It's great to see a fictional extended family that is almost all well-meaning, and the gaggle of boy cousins really is a lot of fun. The whole Phebe dynamic strikes an odd note, and only doesn't get really weird because Rose is just a kid and doesn't know about class struggle. Overall, this book is a quick, easy read and very entertaining in a profoundly old-fashioned way.

It's much better than the Little Women books, for sure. Less namby-pamby. Still pretty annoying, though.

this was s u c h a tedious read, even 10 years after I first read it. a nostalgic read, but god was it a bore. my impression of it only slight improved upon re-reading it. maybe i'll give it a try again in 10 years.

Suka sekali buku ini. Kisah anak lelaki yang bersemangat dengan gadis manis ditengahnya. Akhirnya Rose akan menikah dengan siapa ya?

Kapan nih buku sekuelnya terbit? Atau gak bakal terbit?

This and Little Women are the two best Alcott books. They both have somewhat disappointing sequels. One thing I loved about these books was that they were so clearly written by someone in a different time, who saw the world differently. yet it seemed that if she were to appear in our time, she would be very likeable and interesting.

Plus, I had a crush on those seven boys!
