These are two short, light, but exceedingly well-written novels. They remind me quite a bit of Jane Austen, but that might just be because their plots revolve around marriage. There is nothing I would consider romance in either story, and James imbues the story with a much greater depth and subtext that I have ever encountered in the other's work. They are very simple stories at heart, but I think that works to their credit in the end.
